Volunteering with Jenison Robotics

The success of Jenison Robotics is made possible by enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers. Each season, every participating student is expected to have a family member volunteer at least 3 hours for 4-6th grade students (VEX IQ program) and 8 hours for 7-12th grade students (VEX EDR program). Extra fees will be levied to students that don't meet this requirement.

Jenison Robotics Volunteer Roles

Coaches

Every team needs a parent volunteer "coach". If we don't have enough volunteers to help coach, we will have to limit the number of students we can enroll.
However, this is by far the most fun and rewarding role! The coach's job is to just encourage the students, and keep an eye on them.
We can't stress one thing enough:

  • No experience or technical knowledge is necessary! The coach is not allowed to build or program anything, just be there to support the students as they learn to build the robots, and they learn how to program them to accomplish the tasks!

Event Volunteers

Every league and tournament competition requires volunteers to make it run smoothly. We need the parents to step up and help in the following roles at these events.

  • Table AttendantTable attendants work at the main information and registration table at the event. These volunteers are responsible for checking in teams and greeting guests as they arrive at the event.
  • Team QueuingThese volunteers are responsible for tracking down teams in the pit areas and making sure they get to the field on time for their upcoming match. A smooth queuing process is vital for an event to stay on schedule.
  • Field AssistantField assistants are responsible for resetting the field between matches, as well as assisting the Referee with routine field maintenance when necessary
  • Robot InspectorConduct inspections of robots to verify machines conform to specifications and requirements. All inspectors must read the inspection rules before the competition.
  • RefereeLike almost any other sport, the referees in VEX are responsible for ensuring that teams follow the game rules during the matches. At the end of each match, referees are also responsible for scoring the match, and assigning any necessary penalties. All referees need to review the game rules and referee guide before the competition.
  • JudgeThe panel of judges are responsible for observing and evaluating teams at the event. The panel uses the gathered information to determine which teams are deserving of additional awards at the competition. Judges need to review the judges handbook before the competition.
  • Hospitality HelpHelping feed the teams, volunteers, and judges at the events.
  • Event Set-Up & Tear DownWe need people that can come a little earlier to help set everything up. This includes setting up the field, moving tables and chairs, and setting up the team "pits". After the event is over, we need help packing up and putting everything away.

Welcome to Jenison Robotics!

Our goal is to inspire students to pursue careers in science and technology. We do this by creating opportunities for students to engage in after school activities that create a very effective mix of technology and sports.
We stage team based robotics contests where students learn to participate in a fun, enriching, and worthwhile experience. No experience is necessary, we are here to help every participant be successful!

Jenison Robotics is part of the Jenison Parent and Booster Clubs Organization, and is tax-exempt under the Internal Revenue Code section 501(C) (3).
